The chair of the Huron County Board of Health says the Ministry of Health audit of the health unit is now underway.
Tyler Hessel says the objective of the audit is to make sure the health unit is meeting the guidelines set by the ministry and how the health unit is spending the funding provided to meet those guidelines.
Hessel adds the board is embracing the audit as an opportunity to learn from anything they're not doing and improve going forward.
"So from our perspective we're embracing it. We feel we're very safe in it and anything that maybe we haven't done correctly is a lesson learned and we can move forward and make it better," says Hessel. "The great thing with the audit is they do make recommendations on how you can change things and be more efficient so I think it's a very positive thing."
Hessel says the audit should take four to five weeks and the audit committee will take about two more weeks to review their material and then forward a draft report to the board for review by late August or early September.
He says the audit is for the 2014 and 2015 years so in come cases they will already have made some of the changes recommended in the report.
Hessel adds the ministry routinely conducts three to four audits a year so it's not something out of the ordinary or related in any way to some of the current issues at the Huron County Health Unit.
