Saugeen Shores Police Investigating After Baby Left Unattended in Car

Saugeen Shores Police are investigating after a 6-month-old baby and a dog were recently left inside an idling car outside of a Port Elgin store.

Police say they were told by a witness that the baby and dog were left inside a car for about 25 minutes outside the Giant Tiger on Goderich St. on Saturday, May 28th 2016.

Saugeen Shores Police Chief Dan Rivett says while very concerning for the baby, something like this doesn't happen very often.

"The part that really bothers you is just the fact that the six month (old baby) would be left alone for that length of period of time, and the car's running, and the door's unlocked," says Rivett, adding, "there's a lot of things that could have come together there that could have created a large tragedy."

Both the baby and the dog were placed inside a police cruiser until the infant's mother arrived 7 minutes after police arrival on the scene.

Police aren't yet saying whether or not any charges will be laid.

"That's what we're consulting with the Crown about," notes Chief Rivett.

Both the baby and dog are healthy and said to be doing just fine.
