Perth Wellington's MPP Says The Climate Plan Makes Natural Gas Expansion Unlikely

Perth Wellington's MPP says residents should realize that Ontario's Climate Change Action Plan shows the government has no interest in making energy more affordable.

Randy Pettapiece says the province is not looking our for our best interest, and adds the plan requires new homes to be "carbon net Zero" by 2030.

He points out that is bad news for natural gas because it would be nearly impossible to heat with natural gas while being carbon zero.

He says the Township of Perth East has worked very hard to bring affordable energy in the form of natural gas to Milverton, and local residents deserve a level playing field.

“The Ontario PC Caucus supports a practical and realistic plan to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment," says Pettapiece. "We have been clear that any plan must help to grow our economy, keep hydro bills down, and put money back in the pockets of consumers. The government’s plan will do the opposite.”

He says by making natural gas more expensive over the long term, it is less likely utilities will be willing to make the needed investments.

He adds that Natural Resources Canada doesn't believe net zero housing is feasible because extra costs will run about $150,000.
