Huron County Emergency Phone System Considered Redundant

The Acting Chief of Huron County's Emergency Services is asking county council for permission to phase out its Huron Ready program.

Jeff Horseman says the program provided telephone calls to subscribers in the event of an emergency or natural disaster and is now seriously outdated and understaffed.

There are flaws in the system including not tracking people who moved. And when the system was initiated back in 2009, organizations like the OPP or Environment Canada did not use social media.

But now they do so Huron Ready has become redundant.

Horseman says pending a final decision by council at its next meeting, Emergency Services will almost immediately notify all of the phone numbers in the system that it's being shut down.
