There will be a lot of activity at the Port Elgin beach this evening.
The Saugeen Shores Life Saving Club is planning a Mock Emergency Drill at the Port Elgin Beach, starting at 7:30.
The Saugeen Shores Fire Department, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Police Services, and Bruce County EMS will also be involved.
The main focus of the mock emergency will be "Boat Sober", "Lifejackets Save Lives", and "Get Trained".
Prior to the mock emergency, the collaborative group will be conducting a public Water Safety Information Session and Demonstration.
There will also be an information booth beside the drill scene where local residents and tourists can collect information from Red Cross, Lifesaving Society and the Saugeen Shores Life Saving Club.
Drowning deaths in Ontario continue to rise. The most recent coroner’s data indicates there has been an increase of 8 per cent in the number of deaths in and around water ways from 2008 to 2012.
With the majority of those deaths occurring between May and September, Emergency Service partners are trying to educate residents and tourists to be safe in and around the water this summer.
