Bayfield Groups Wants To Buy River Flats Acreage

A group of Bayfield-area residents have organized to try and purchase a strip of land along the Bayfield River.

The group is called Bayfield River Flats Natural Area committee and Chair Dave Gillians explains it's a 4.75 acre parcel of land beside the Bayfield Bridge.

He says the land is currently privately owned and could be closed down at any time.

The MTO will be negotiating access sometime within the next couple of months as part of the Bayfield Bridge re-construction.

Gillian says the total cost for the property is about $70,000 and they've submitted an offer to purchase with a condition that expired on November 31 and the sale date would be January 1.

Gillian adds the ultimate goal is to turn the property over to the Huron Tract Land Trust Conservancy. He says the official fund-raising campaign will begin on September 1.

Gillian says once they have the property it will be up to the community to decide how to use it but he suggests it would be a unique 1,000 ft of quiet river front property that could be enjoyed in a number of ways.

He adds the old mill was once located on the property so it has some historical significance as well.
