Bayfield Beach Cleanup Slated For Saturday Morning

A beach clean-up in Bayfield is going hi-tech.

Tomorrow's beach clean-up is being co-ordinated by BLUEBAYFIELD and is part of the launch of eXXpetition 2016 – the journey around the Great Lakes to raise awareness of the growing presence of plastic waste in the lakes and along the shorelines.

BLUEBAYFIELD spokesperson Ray Letheran says he expects close to thirty volunteers will be on hand at the Bayfield Main Beach around 8:30am Saturday morning. Letheran says they'll be focusing on plastic waste, but picking up whatever they find along the beach as well as any rivers, creeks and ditches that carry waste to the lake. What is unique about this clean-up is volunteers will use an app on their cell phones that will allow them to click whenever they pick up something, and that information will go to an international data bank, and they'll be able to see exactly where they found plastic bottles or cigarette butts or whatever else they find.

Anyone who wants to help out with the clean-up is invited to meet at the Main Beach in Bayfield at 8:30am and bring your cell phone.
