MPPs Criticize Education Minister For Bluewater School Closures

Two local MPPs have issued an open letter to Education Minister Mitzie Hunter in regards to school closures, including up to 18 school closures in the Bluewater District School Board.

MPP's Lisa Thompson for Huron Bruce and Bill Walker for Bruce Grey Owen Sound say the education minister has ordered a capital cut of $2.5-million in the region, putting schools like Paisley Central, and Beavercrest Community in Markdale on the chopping block.

They call the school closure rules punitive and shortsighted, as they destabilize communities and make employers nervous.

The MPPs say major employers like Chapman's Ice Cream in Markdale, and Bruce Power in Tiverton, deserve assurances that key amenities like schools will stay open in the region.

Thompson and Walker says the government's high debt, arbitrary funding formula, and shortened accommodations reviews are behind the mass closures.
