Huron's Food Bank Distribution Centre Seeks $60K In County Funding

Huron County's Food Bank Distribution Centre is asking the county for $60,000 in funding for next year.

Executive Director Mary Ellen Zielman made a presentation and request at Wednesday's council meeting.

She says the situation in Huron County isn't really getting much better.

She says while some people are able to become less dependent on the food bank other people take their place.

Zielman also explains in rural communities like those found in Huron County poverty is less visible than in urban centres.

Homeless people are not found on highways or on rural roads. She adds in the colder weather they turn to shelters and so are indoors.

One of the concerns expressed by councillors was that council does not want it's support to be an ongoing donation but instead something that leads to a solution to the problem.

Zielman says the only real solution would be higher wages and that's not really something the county can control.

Council referred the funding request to budget deliberations.
