Meaford Trying To Build Transit Service

Municipal staff in Meaford are preparing an application for a $40,000 grant toward building ten bus stops and buying a mid-size van for the municipality’s transit system.

The PTIF is a federal-provincial program that pays municipalities up to 50% of the cost of transit-related projects.

The cost of the ten bus stops in Meaford and the van is estimated to be about $110,000.

Meaford’s share to the funding would come from its provincial gas tax reserve.

At the beginning of 2016, this reserve had a balance of about $395,000.

This means Meaford would not need to finance building the bus stops or purchase the van from user fees or taxes.

It could be five or six months before Meaford council finds out if the application was successful.
