United Way Perth-Huron Helping With Job Action Centre In St. Marys

The United Way of Perth-Huron is working with residents of St. Marys, as well as Kraft-Heinz representatives and the province, to help employees at the Kraft-Heinz plant find new work.

The plant is closing in a couple of the weeks and that will put just over 200 people out of work.

United Way Executive Director Ryan Erb says they will work with employees from the plant to set up a job action centre to help connect laid-off employees with employment or re-training opportunities in the area.

Erb adds in similar situations in the past, he's found about 80% of employees find work within a year so he hopes that will be the case with Kraft-Heinz employees.

He also points out the transition can be very difficult for people who have built up a lot of seniority, because it will be difficult to replace the salary and things like holiday pay they've built up over those years.
