Students across our region are learning about First Nation treaties this week.
It's been designated as Treaties Recognition Week by Ontario's Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.
Educators will plan learning activities for students and help promote awareness of treaties.
In Bluewater District schools, this includes the use of 'We Are All Treaty People' teacher kits to support student learning.
G.C. Huston Public School in Southampton introduced the occasion at a Good Path student assembly. A guest speaker will also be discussing treaties and their significance with classes from Grades 2 to 8.
The Upper Grand District School Board will welcome Ontario Human Rights Commissioner Maurice Switzer of Alderville First Nation, who will discuss reconciliation and the restoration of nation-to-nation relationships on Tuesday with staff and community guests.
Traditional knowledge keeper, Isaac Murdoch of Serpent River First Nation will discuss his personal experiences as a treaty partner on his reserve, and about the important treaty partnership we all have, with the land.
Both Commissioner Switzer and Mr. Murdoch will be visiting a number of secondary school classes to discuss treaty relationships during the week.
