Goderich Will Consider Helipad Near Hospital

Goderich council has asked staff to look into the possibility of putting a helipad in town across the road from the hospital.

Mayor Kevin Morrison says he was surprised when he moved to Goderich in 2008 and discovered the town didn't have a helipad.

He says Ornge helicopters, at that time, were landing at the airport to pick up patients who had been transported there by ambulance from the hospital. This added about 30 minutes to the trip to the larger hospital.

Morrison notes the location across the street from the hospital is viable because it was used during the tornado.

A presentation by Doctor Paul Gill at this week's council meeting made the case for the helipad.

Morrison says he's learned that Ornge has funding for the maintenance of a helipad but not for the construction and special lighting that would be required.

The mayor estimates it would cost between $40,000 and $60,000 for the concrete and that cost would have to be borne by the community, but he believes there would be support for the project.
