Bayfield Cat Problem

The councillor for the ward of Bayfield says cats are still a problem in the village.

At his most recent Councillor's Corner discussion Bill Whetstone was told there are at least three pockets or stray or feral cats in the village with an estimated total population of 15 to 20.

Whetstone says one woman drove up from Sarnia for the meeting to offer some advice and some assistance. She explained they had similar problems in their area and said at one point there were over 100 cats plaguing the Petrolia area and by trapping, neutering and releasing them they were able to reduce that number to about nine.

Whetstone adds he's also learned the difference between stray cats and feral cats. He explains stray cats are cats that have run away from homes while feral cats are cats that were simply born into their community of cats.

Whetstone says at this point the issue hasn't been discussed at council so he doesn't know if the municipality would be willing to support the program with some funding.
