Most Midwestern Snomobile Trails Closed

Snowmobile trails will remain closed in the region despite colder temperatures and a few new flakes of snow.

An Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs spokesperson says the week's rain, warm temperatures and high winds wreaked havoc on local trails.

District 9 Manager Karen Buratynski says volunteers are pleased with the snow in the forecast this weekend, but they need to go over all trails to see if they are safe for riders.

Some areas have major water issues and erosion.

She adds about 3,000 km of the groomed trail is on private property, and riding on it without a proper base could damage the land

That could result in land use privileges being revoked, which could permanently close that trail.

There could also be trees and bushes across trails.

Riders need to check on trail status before heading out as some trails may open over the weekend. You can call 1-800-387-SNOW.

The only trails open in the area right now are the B110 rail line from Dundalk to Owen Sound and trails around the Durham area.
