Call For Referendum For Bruce Power Nuclear Waste Bunker

Saugeen Shores Council is expected to vote on a motion to support the proposed Deep Geologic Repository for nuclear waste at Bruce Power.

The motion was delayed from the last council meeting to allow time for public input.  The motion had also been deferred when Ontario Power Generation was asked to study alternate sites a year ago.

Saugeen Shores resident John Mann has written to council to say the OPG never studied any specific alternate sites, but just looked at geographic regions. He says that OPG felt actual alternate site studies would take another decade.

OPG's report suggested that moving the low and medium term nuclear waste off site would be more dangerous and more costly than keeping it in Kincardine.

Mann also says that Saugeen Shores Council is bound to represent citizens, and he says the majority of residents have spoken against it. He says democracy requires a meaningful referendum.

Mann wants Saugeen Shores Council to then consider if the need for a DGR for low and medium level nuclear waste, when the high level nuclear fuel waste still sits on the surface, and may never be moved.
