Community Living CEO Praises Avon Maitland's Inclusive Schools

The Avon Maitland District School Board has been recognized by Community Living Ontario for its work in inclusive education.

Chris Beesley is the CEO for Community Living Ontario and was at a recent board meeting for a discussion about inclusive education.

He says Community Living strongly supports inclusive education for students with intellectual disabilities and the work the Avon Maitland board is doing in that area.

Some parents were also at the meeting to register their opposition to inclusive education when it comes to their children.

Beesley commented that more often parents are critical of boards for not providing opportunities for inclusive education.  He said it was unusual to see boards in favour of it, and parents opposed to it.

The award presented to Avon Maitland students was for their success in the "Together We're Better" contest in which students were asked to show how they all benefit by learning together.

Beesley adds the Avon Maitland board also received an award for inclusive education a couple of years ago from Community Living Canada.
