United Way Trying Options To Improve Transportation Needs

One of the most challenging issues today in Huron and Perth counties is the lack of public transportation.

The Perth-Huron United Way's Social Research and Planning Council is one of several organizations that has looked for answers, and one thing they have all concluded is there is no silver bullet.

With the exception of Stratford, Huron and Perth don't have the population density to support conventional public transportation, and most residents would say they don't want that population density.

But Council Director Tracy Birtch says they have established a ride-share program that allows neighbours to help neighbours by sharing rides to places like London or Kitchener.  People can go online to find out who is offering rides on any given day.

Another option they're working on for people who don't have access to a vehicle, is a community car-share program that allows people to borrow a car for a short period of time.

The web site for the ride-share program is regionalrideshare.ca.
