Huron County OPP continue to investigate an apparent drowning that happened last night on Nine Mile River west of Dungannon.
At 5:53pm, emergency services providers from Huron County OPP, Huron County Paramedic Services, Lucknow Fire Department and Air Ornge responded to a property located on Cransford Line to assist an unresponsive male.
Police say two friends were canoeing on the rapids of Nine Mile River, when they encountered a blind corner, and a felled tree around the bend. The canoe struck the tree, flipping the canoe and trapping the victim below. His friend freed him and got him to shore, but despite life-saving efforts, the male couldn't be revived.
The deceased has been identified as Nicholas St. Pierre-Beke, 23 years of age from Cambridge. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
