Blyth Native and Flint Firebirds captain Alex Peters was awarded the 2016-17 Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy.
The award is given to the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice as chosen by a media selection committee. Nominations are submitted by OHL general managers.
On it's website, the Firebirds say Peters is the first captain in Firebirds history to be given the "C" when the team relocated from Plymouth. The article goes on to say Peters is affectionately known as "Captain Petey" and was already a two-time recipient of the club's Humanitarian Award for his work on events like the "Firebirds Fight Hunger" campaign, the teddy bear donations to children's organizations and the club's reading program. The team says Peters would also make countless visits to local hospitals to see patients on his own time.
Head Coach Ryan Oulahen was quoted as saying: "Alex is a special person and was a huge part of the turnaround for the Flint Firebirds. He is responsible for setting a great culture on and off the ice. His work habits, positive outlook, relentless approach to getting better, attention to detail, determination, sincere demeanor, maturity and overall competitiveness are just a few of the characteristics Alex shows on and off the ice on a daily basis."
