The municipality of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh is looking for ways to reduce the naturally-occurring arsenic levels in the two municipal wells in Dungannon.
Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek says in the past, the acceptable level of arsenic was 25 parts per million, but effective as of January 2018, the acceptable level is ten parts per million.
Both wells in Dungannon were under the 25 limit, but are above ten parts per million.
Van Diepenbeek says options at this point are drilling new wells a little deeper to get past the arsenic or filter it, which he says can be fairly expensive.
The reeve says he's learned that arsenic is a naturally-occurring chemical in some rock formations, but is usually within acceptable levels.
