Perth County Wants Residents To Prepare For Possible Chemical Leaks

Perth County's emergency management coordinator wants residents to be prepared in the event of a chemical spill.

Dave Colvin says many people were unaware what to do during an ammonia leak in Listowel last year.  And he says Tuesday's collision in St. Catherines, involving a tanker of flammable and toxic gas, highlights the need for residents to be prepared to either evacuate or shelter in place.

"Well, shelter in place can be as simple as going inside, closing your doors and windows, shutting off outside air, taking a cell phone and a radio and waiting until the all clear is given," says Colvin.

He says if the risk is more severe, residents could also be asked to head to a centre room and seal under the door with a wet towel.

Colvin says people should also have a grab and go bag by the front door with necessities in case they need to evacuate.

He wants people in Perth County to think about the necessary items they would take with them in the event of an evacuation.

"One common approach is having a grab and go bag in the front closet, with things like emergency contact information, an extra pair of glasses, a charger for your cell phone... maybe some extra socks or clothing," he says.

Colvin says residents were not clear on what to do during last year's ammonia leak in Listowel.
