Wellington North Council is looking at revising the kennel licensing provisions in light of recent applications to establish new kennels.
Mayor Andy Lennox says the township has had six licensed kennels operating without complaint or animal welfare concerns for many years. However, some new applications have prompted public concerns about the welfare of dogs.
A public meeting is planned on an updated draft bylaw.
An animal control officer and the Guelph Humane Society are reviewing the proposed changes.
People can comment on the proposal until noon on July 19.
Council will consider enacting the bylaw on July 24.
“We understand and share the public concern and as a result, council and staff are conducting a review of the Township’s current kennel licensing and inspection provisions. This is the tool that we have at our disposal to ensure the well-being of dogs housed in licensed kennels in our community," says Lennox.
As a part of that review a draft bylaw is posted on the township’s website here, or can be obtained by calling the Township office at (519) 848-3620 ext. 127, or by stopping by the municipal office currently located in a temporary location in the Mount Forest Sports Complex, upper level.
