Perth County Reminds Residents To Be Weather Aware This Summer

Perth County is reminding residents spending time outside, that they need to know what to do in the event of severe weather.

Community Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Colvin says with residents making plans to go camping, boating, swimming or playing sports, they should remember to check the forecast.

"We have great resources on the web. Tornadoes and violent storms don't normally come without advance warning. So, be weather aware. One of the things we emphasize is when thunder roars, go indoors," he says. "If you're playing sports, if you're out on the golf course, if you're camping, just make sure you know where there is a safe place to go. In a car, if you're out on a sportsfield, is a good choice. The top place is a sturdy building with electrical wiring and plumbing that would protect you from lightning."

He says it's very dangerous to stand out and watch storms.

"In a tornado, you should be seeking shelter in a small room in the centre of the house, or if you have a basement, go to the basement," he says. "Take your cell phone, take some emergency supplies, and follow the weather forecast."

He adds winds can topple trees and bring down power lines.

Perth County has posted emergency information on its website with tips about what to do in severe weather and tornadoes.
