Starting Saturday, motorists in Wellington County will have to pay a fee to recharge their electric vehicles at one of the region's three Level 3 charging stations.
County council approved a staff recommendation to charge $12 per hour, prorated by the minute, plus a flat fee of $2.50 per session.
The province provided the county with a grant of over $215,000 last June to cover the capital and installation costs of the three EV charging stations.
The county must own, operate and maintain the stations for at least five years. The Level 3 stations will charge an electric vehicle to 80% in only 20-30 minutes.
The chargers became operational in April at the Arthur, and Puslinch libraries as well as at Social Services in Guelph.
The county surveyed the rates being charged by other municipalities.
Greenlots has a contract to operate the chargers.
"In keeping with its commitment to improving the environment, the County is pleased to be able to offer electric vehicle charging stations to our residents and visitors to the area,” says Warden Dennis Lever. “I’m sure that these three charging stations will be well utilized.”
