A man with a well-known passion for Ontario's West Coast will be honoured Sunday at Sauble Beach.
Friends of Sauble Beach will unveil a plaque dedicating the Geoff Peach Walkway.
Peach was a co-founder of the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation and a strong proponent of the preservation of the beach and dune ecosystem at Sauble Beach. The Blyth resident passed away earlier this year.
Members of Peach's family, and friends of the family will join Friends of Sauble Beach at the Sauble Falls Road beach access walkway Sunday afternoon at 1pm to dedicate the Geoff Peach Walkway.
Friends of Sauble Beach hired Peach and his organization to develop a plan that would ensure the beach would remain viable for future generations. Out of that plan grew the town's Dynamic Beach Bylaw, limiting beach access and resulting sand “blow-outs” and the installation of walkways, some of them accessible.
Peach also participated in FSB information seminars and helped with the organization's schools program.
"A lot of the work Geoff did with FSB and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula was conducted during historically low lake levels," said FSB Director Keith Brownlee, "but Geoff always reminded us that lake levels rise and fall. This year's high water level reminds us of the critical importance of the dunes in flood control."
"He will certainly be missed, not only by FSB members, but by the residents of Sauble Beach who might not have known him, but who benefit from his expertise and passion for Ontario's West Coast," said Keith.
