Recognizing A Volunteer Foundation (GALLERY)

Twenty three community sports builders were recognized for their efforts in sports in local communities on Saturday in Goderich.

It was part of the Western Ontario Athletic Association's (WOAA) 75th anniversary celebrations.

The honourees were nominated from several communities including, Goderich, Blyth, Wingham, Lucknow, Teeswater, Mildmay, Walkerton, Cargill, Kincardine, Owen Sound, Hanover, Chatsworth, Listowel and Palmerston.

"It's based on volunteers," says WOAA President Al Dickson. "The volunteers have a good heart and they love to do their job."

Each community sports builder was nominated by a person or organization earlier this year. The honourees, or members of their family, were then presented with a banner Saturday.

Founded in 1942 by Wingham's "Doc" Cruickshank, the WOAA was to promote and improve sports in the rural communities.

"[The teams] represent the area really well when they go into the OMHA or OASA in the past 50 to 60 years," says Dickson.
