The most successful driver in harness racing is wrapping up his career on Legends Day at Clinton Raceway on Sunday.
John Campbell earned his first career driving victory at the Western Fair Raceway in London in 1972 but made his mark when he moved to the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey in the late 1970's. Campbell earned $300 million dollars in purse winnings, the most of any standardbred driver. David Miller is second at $219 million.
Campbell has already been inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame, the London Sports Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame this fall.
He competed in his first Legends Day trot at Clinton Raceway in 2001 and has been back every two years since.
In a release, Campbell says his whole family is coming up from his home in New Jersey to see his final race in Clinton this Sunday including his mother, wife, their three daughters and their families along with his sister Jo-Ann McLinchey and her family.
"It's going to be a great family gathering for us," Campbell is quoted as saying.
