The Kinsmen Club of Meaford is determined to help the organizers of the Scarecrow Invasion and Family Festival.
The popular parade and festival had to be cancelled on short notice Friday when heavy rain and violent wind gusts hit Meaford.
With power lines down, and tree limbs and debris everywhere, the decision was made to cancel the events for the sake of public safety.
By Saturday morning, Kinsmen Club of Meaford President Dan White had rallied fellow Kinsmen and local service clubs to sell hamburgers at Grandma Lambe’s on Hwy. 26 as a fundraiser to help offset the expenses and loss in revenue from the cancelled festival.
The Kinsmen and service clubs are planning a second venue this week for the sale of hamburgers and candy apples.
"By 4pm, the OPP, municipal firefighters and public works crews had been called out to emergency situations," said Head Scarecrow Marilyn Morris. "Our tents at the harbour pavilion were getting blown apart."
But Morris added, " I want the public to know that the scarecrows weathered the storm and they will remain on display in the downtown area, at Station Hill, and at the entrances to town and participating businesses now till after the Thanksgiving weekend."
