Bruce County Close To 2018 Budget

Bruce County council is set to sign off on its 2018 budget.

The corporate services committee approved the budget with a 3.27% tax levy increase, which amounts to over $1.4-million in additional spending compared to 2017.

Director of Corporate Services Bettyanne Cobean says the exact impact on tax bills is not known yet, as the county does not know how much the property assessment base has grown this year.

She says they are hoping to beat the 1% growth the county experienced last year.

"The last number of years, we've seen a 1% growth, which would simply put, reduce that 3.27% [increase] to 2.27%," says Cobean. "We are certainly confident that 1% [growth] increase is going to be greater than that."

Cobean says they expect to have updated assessment information from MPAC by January.

Warden Mitch Twolan says he's happy with how the budget turned out, pointing out there's factors out of their control, such as cost-of-living increases to staff.

Bruce County council is expected to adopt the 2018 budget at its December 7 meeting.
