North Huron Council received a presentation from members of the Maitland Valley Conversation Authority Monday night on its priorities for the next three years.
Flood and Erosion Safety Services Coordinator Steve Jackson says the authority is putting resources into its flood forecasting system, watershed stewardship, as well as stabilizing its financial base.
A lengthy downpour in late June flooded areas along the upper Maitland River, including sections of Harriston, Gorrie, and Wingham.
Jackson says the MVCA's Flood Forecast System enabled them to provide timely information to property owners and municipalities, but a better forecasting system is needed to predict and prepare for local "severe weather events".
Jackson pointed out that the changing climate makes it very challenging for decision-making when it comes to weather events that could require evacuations.
