Wellington North council is not changing its position on backyard chicken coops in urban areas.
Dale Martin of Mount Forest wrote to council that his family’s chicken coop was shut down after one complaint from a neighbour.
He stated that there are other coops operating in Mount Forest and they are a great way to teach children responsibilities and also make them aware where their food comes from.
But Mayor Andy Lennox, and a majority of council, opposed lifting the ban.
Some of the concerns expressed by council included public safety, bio-security and odour.
