Union Donates To Huron County Groups And Charities

Members of OPSEU Local 121 in Huron County have donated $5,000 to local organizations.

Union Treasurer Jacqui Empson Laporte explains they are given the freedom to take a certain amount of money from union dues and give it back to the community.

They're donating a total of $5,000 to organizations like Victims Services, St. Vincent de Paul, Goderich Ringette and the Salvation Army. They also contribute to the Christmas Bureau.

Empson Laporte says their members work at places like the court house in Probation and Parole, and at Service Ontario, so they see people in the community that need some assistance -- and if there is a way they can help, they will.

"We are given the freedom to bring it back to our community because we work in public services in the county and we wanna return that money to the county," she says. "We get together and decide which charities or which organizations within our community can receive some funding."
