'Fake News' Troubles North Huron Councillors

The Municipality of North Huron may have a "fake news" problem.

Reeve Neil Vincent took time at Monday night's council meeting to remind councillors to be vigilant for stories written by or about fellow council members on blogs, Twitter and Facebook, after false statements emerged that are being attributed to Councillor Bill Knott.

A blog centered on the Village of Blyth has attributed intentionally-misleading statements to North Huron councillors, prompting Reeve Vincent to advise fellow members of council to stay in communication. This website has also started a Facebook account that is bringing up the '"fake news" on local residents' news feeds.

Councilor Bill Knott says he is troubled that a lot of the misleading statements are being incorrectly attributed to him, noting he has received emails from citizens concerned about these false stories.

Knott stated that someone has created a fake email address with his name on it, and has been sending emails to the clerk in an attempt to create friction between himself and fellow members of staff and council.
