Bruce County has confirmed it's involvement in a homelessness enumeration.
Warden Paul Eagleson has announced that the enumeration program will be conducted next week, in partnership with Grey County. It's an effort to determine rural needs and ensure that services can be established locally to help residents.
Staff volunteers will ask service users to voluntarily fill out a questionnaire. Hub sites will be in Walkerton, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores and Wiarton.
The enumeration will take place between Monday and Friday of next week. The information gathered will be used to create a profile of the homelessness population in Bruce County.
"The enumeration will take place at several key hub sites in Bruce County, where people who are homeless will be asked to provide information about their current living situation," says Bruce County’s CAO Kelley Coulter. "Bruce County is part of an effort by the Ontario government to end chronic homelessness throughout the province by 2025."
Homelessness is often hidden in rural areas where people experiencing homelessness will "couch surf" with friends or relatives, or move to nearby cities in the hope of finding appropriate services.
