Man And Woman Injured In Mount Forest Fire

One man suffered first and second-degree burns and a woman had to be rescued from the second floor during a fire in Mount Forest.

Crews were called to the century home on Peel St. Thursday night around 6:20pm. The home is divided into ten apartment units.

When Wellington North fire crews arrived, flames and smoke were spilling out of the side of the building. There was also a man on the front lawn with burns to his face and arms.

Fire Chief Dave Guilbault says the coordinated their efforts when they got there.

"One attacking the fire and the other one doing the rescue and then going back for animals too," said Guilbault. "So we had an intense fire with a lot of heat and smoke and the firefighters are crawling on the floor trying to find the cats and the dogs."

Two dogs and three cats were rescued.

"It was a quick response," said Guilbault. "Quick knockdown of the fire, up with the ladders, get the person out. It was textbook."

One firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion.

The cause of the fire was a pot of grease left on a stove unattended.

Damage is estimated at $250,000 and four tenants are displaced because of the fire.
