Employees of the Canadian Tire Store in Stratford prevented a local resident from losing $5,000 from her bank account.
A customer was attempting to purchase $5000 worth of gift cards last Thursday, when a concerned Canadian Tire employee contacted Stratford police.
The resident later told police she had been directed by telephone to purchase the gift cards or be arrested.
The Stratford Police Service is reminding the public that any request for money over the phone is most likely a scam and Police should be contacted immediately. There is no police service or government agency in Canada that will ask you to purchase gift cards in order to avoid being arrested.
Business owners are reminded to advise their employees that anyone purchasing over $100 in gift cards should be questioned regarding the reason for the purchase.
