New school in Hanover to open in 2019

September 2019 is the opening month for a new school in Hanover.

The new building will replace John Diefenbaker Senior School and will open to students and staff at the start of the next school year. The school will provide programming for Grade 7 to 12 students and French Immersion. It's on the east side of 18th Ave. between 6th Street and 1st Street.

At first, it was planned to move students and staff into the new facility by the middle of the current school year, but officials decided a transfer at the beginning of a new school year would be less disruptive.

That transition will start in June after exams.

In a news release from the board, Chair Ron Motz said there has been a will for a replacement for a long time.

"We are pleased to see this significant project near its completion, and know that current and future generations of Bluewater students will reap the benefits of a state-of-the-art new school for years to come,” said Motz.

The Ministry of Education's School Consolidation Capital program is funding the $20.8 million build and a grand opening ceremony will be held in the fall of 2019.
