Potentially-dangerous ammonia has been removed from the Memorial Arena in Goderich.
An inspection last summer found that the ice-making system was no longer safe to operate and there was a danger of the ammonia leaking.
CAO Larry McCabe said it could have been a serious problem if ice had been put in, so the ammonia was removed about a week ago.
McCabe said the auditorium is still being used.
"The arena is open. It's used for a number of functions in the auditorium. I believe there was just a car show there on the weekend," said McCabe. "The new council will deal, in conjunction with the Recreation Board of Management, with what will happen with the future of that arena."
Among the options is whether the town needs two ice surfaces and, if it's determined that two are needed, do they keep the Memorial Arena going, or add a second ice pad to the Maitland Rec. Centre.
