Flu outbreak at Stratford Hospital almost over

The CEO of the Huron-Perth Healthcare Alliance says they are hoping to declare their flu outbreak at the Stratford Hospital over by Saturday.

Andrew Williams said they had two hospital-acquired influenza cases a week ago and a third patient with flu-like symptoms, so that's when they declared the outbreak.

Williams said staff worked hard to control it, they restricted visitors and made some changes on the unit to try and make sure the flu did not spread.

"Hopefully by Saturday, we'll be able to declare the outbreak over. It's very much driven by the number of cases that you have and in our particular situation where we have two hospital-acquired influenza cases, that's when we declared the outbreak. Then we identified a third patient," he said.

Williams also said the influenza vaccine rate across the four Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance sites is about 86 per cent, and he believes that's had a significant impact in limiting the spread of the flu.
