Kindness matters to a 12-year-old from Blyth and it hit a chord with the International Lions Club.
Mikayla Ansley wrote an essay as part of the writing contest dealing with expressions of peace.
"I was really happy to partake in this because I thought writing my essay, and everyone would read it, would send a message out that kindness really does matter," said Ansley.
Ansley shared her story of suffering from Retinoblastoma as an infant, a rare cancer that affects the eyes. The family had to make some sacrifices to stay with Ansley through that time.
"There was a lot of people that donated toys and money," said Ansley. "And it was really kind."
Ansley's essay was judged at various stages just to reach the international level. She will head to New York City on March 9 to recognized by the International Lions Club.
