Huron-Perth Health Units amalgamation still on track

The acting medical officer of health for Huron County would like to see the amalgamation of the Huron and Perth Health units move a little quicker.

But Dr. Maarten Bokhout said given the scope of the project and the number of people involved, it's probably going as well as can be expected.

"When you've got a fairly large number of people that you want to be involved in the decision-making process you try to build a consensus as much as possible. It takes time to get the facts to people to give them a chance to think about it and then coordinate the next steps," said Bokhout.

Bokhout also said there are still a lot of uncertainties, some of them related to the change in provincial government.

"We don't know yet exactly what the funding model for public health is going to be and we won't know that for some time. We've been given assurances that we're going to be well looked after, but we will need to see that kind of detail in writing," said Bokhout.

Bokhout said he remains confident the amalgamation will be completed, as scheduled, by January 1, 2020.
