Bruce Power was joined by representatives of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and various labour groups to honour workers who have been killed, injured or become ill on the job.
The annual Day of Mourning ceremony, which was held on Monday at the Bruce Power site, included members of the Power Workers’ Union, the Society of United Professionals, the Grey Bruce Labour Council, the building trades, and Ontario Power Generation employees.
The memorial also including families of those who died during the construction of the Bruce nuclear site. A cairn outside Bruce Power’s Corporate Services Building memorializes these 11 fallen workers, 10 of whom were part of the construction trades.
“At Bruce Power, safety is always our Number 1 priority,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s president and CEO. “It’s important to reflect upon those who lost their lives while building the Bruce Power site. Every day we honour their memory by working as safely as possible, with the ultimate goal of never having to tell another family their loved one is not coming home at the end of the day.”
