Second World War buildings in Vanastra to be highlighted

Huron East's Economic Development Officer has prepared a unique Jane's Walk for this Saturday.

Jan Hawley has put together a Heritage Walking Trail through Vanastra, highlighting some of the historic buildings from the Second World War when thousands of airmen were in Vanastra for training in how to use radar.

Some of the buildings have been destroyed by fire and others have been demolished, but Hawley said she's amazed at how many of them are still standing.

"This is where airmen from around the world were sent and they were trained in radar, but they had to sign off once they entered that property not to say a word because the war was on and they were very protective about this information," she said.

She said she will have maps of the walk, pointing out the historic buildings and they'll have plaques in front of them.

The walk will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. Guides will be available, but it can be a self-guided walk as well.  The walk is between two and three kilometres long.

More information can be found on the Huron East Facebook page.
