OPP charge dozens of drivers in Huron and Wellington counties

 Huron County Ontario Provincial Police officers laid dozens of charges during the Canada Day Long Weekend in an effort to keep roads and waterways safe.

Huron OPP is very pleased to report there were no fatalities on our roadways or waterways over the long weekend. In total, there were 15 motor vehicle collisions reported to the OPP that were investigated within Huron County. The majority of these crashes were minor property damage crashes.

Out on the roads, officers charged a total of 78 drivers with speeding, one for failing to wear a seatbelt, three with distracted driving, and three with liquor-related charges. Two were charged with stunt driving offences for racing their vehicles in excess of 50 km/h over the limit.

Several RIDE checks took place and one motorist was served with an alcohol warn-range suspension however Huron OPP is very pleased to report no drivers were charged with Impaired Driving.

Out on Lake Huron, Huron OPP officers conducted marine patrol on Canada Day between Port Franks and St. Josephs. Numerous vessel checks were completed and the overwhelming majority of vessels and operators were found to be in compliance.

One vessel operator was charged with failing to have enough lifejackets/personal floatation devices on board for all of his passengers. A 13-year-old was also sent into shore for operating a Personal Watercraft (PWC) without a Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC) and for being underage while operating a PWC.

In the meantime, Wellington County OPP laid numerous charges during a long weekend enforcement initiative in a zero-tolerance province-wide effort to make roads safer.

Officers laid 96 charges for speeding, five for stunt driving, 17 for seatbelts, one for distracted driving, and 17 other highway traffic offences.

Four impaired drives were charges and 10 drivers were charged for insurance act offences. Wellington County OPP also laid four marine related charges and 16 provincial offences.

"We targeted the 'Big 4' [impaired operation, speeding, seat-belts and distracted driving] as they significantly endanger drivers on our highways and we also looked for other driving offences that needed correcting." Wellington County OPP Traffic Management Unit Manager Sgt. Darryl Porterfield.
