North Perth supports recycled content in plastic bags

The Municipality of North Perth has joined the "Recycle More Bags" initiative that's spreading across North American.

North Perth has added its name to a growing list of municipalities pushing for change to legislation and procurement policies that will result in increased recycled content in plastic bags.

Council also passed a resolution to adjust the municipal procurement policy to require the use of 20 per cent post-consumer recycled content in all garbage bags used by the Corporation of North Perth.

Recycling stakeholders are submitting recommendations to North American governments, asking for a mandate of a minimum 10 per cent post-consumer plastic in the manufacture of new bags, increasing to 20 per cent by 2025.

These actions will result in job creation and improved financial sustainability for the Blue Box program while reducing the negative environmental impact of plastic bags.
