United Way joins with Street to Feet to tackle homelessness in Exeter

United Way Perth Huron is working with a group called "Street to Feet" to address the homeless issue in Exeter and area.

Executive Director Ryan Erb said they've started by trying to raise money for a couple of new programs in the area.

"One is an expansion of a program called Turning Point that exists already in Exeter," he said. "So it's a transitional home for men and we're looking to add three beds there from the existing three."

Erb added that's just the first step in the process.

"We want people to be housed permanently and then we have an opportunity, once that happens, to walk alongside them and work with them with whatever issue they might have," he said. "It could simply be unemployment or it could be something much more complex that they're struggling with whether its addictions or mental health issues."

He added the problem in Exeter includes people from all walks of life and they need to do something significant and they have to do it quickly.
