Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody says it was a tough decision to cancel the 20th Anniversary Memorial for the Walkerton water tragedy in May.
However, he said the COVID-19 situation left them with no choice.
Peabody notes the memorial, scheduled for May 9, was going to involve a solemn remembrance of those who tragically passed away as a result of the water crisis at the Walkerton Heritage Water Park Garden, as well as the introduction of a special scholarship.
"We were working with some different partners to set up a scholarship fund that would fund students from the area that would go study water treatment at a college, for example. A legacy type scholarship in that area," said Peabody.
Mayor Peabody said they haven't discussed a new date yet because of coronavirus, but the service will take place at a later date as planned.
"A memorial service with Justice O'Connor, who is going to speak, and then we were also going to have a community choir to sing some memorial songs, and the two high schools were also going to contribute music," added Peabody.
