Fire causes major damage at Sebringville Feed Mill

Firefighters from across Perth County were called in to extinguish a blaze at the Sebringville Feed Mill Thursday afternoon.

Perth East/West Fire Prevention Officer James Marshall said they received a call for a chimney fire at the feed mill and numerous departments responded between noon and 1 pm, finding heavy smoke conditions and sparks coming from the chimney and open flame at the front of the building halfway up the facade.

"Crews put out the fire that they saw and requested backup from Milverton and West Perth (Mitchell) stations, and with that, we were able to extinguish the fire. We also brought in St. Marys for support on the rear of the building."

Marshall said while they do know the area the fire started in, it will take some time to determine a cause, which isn't being deemed suspicious in any way. He said the fire covered a number of areas within the mill and caused significant damage.

"We had fire conditions in the basement, on the main floor and we had some burning up on the 4th floor as the fire travelled along the ventilation shaft and ducting. As far as damage goes, we're saying about $200,000 in damage."

Luckily no injuries were reported. The Huron Road building, believed to have been built in 1962, contained a wide variety of grains and combustible materials. The fire was largely contained by 2 p.m.
