Working on G2G trail improvements

Improvements are being made to the G2G Trail between Guelph and Goderich.

Board member Chris Lee says it's been a decade since the idea for the 130 km stretch of trail was tabled and now they're working on improvements.

“The program this year has been to put down stone dust along the whole length of the trail. There's portions of it down around Guelph and between the Maitland River and Goderich that were reasonably improved and had good services. But in between was basically unimproved,” said Lee. “We got the funding in December and with the COVID situation weren't sure if we could even get underway in the spring and there were some delays and then finally we did get it going and really, it's been overwhelming, the amount of volunteer and in-king offering, people have just stepped up to make it happen.”

How much they have to put down in any area depends on the condition of that part of the trail. This week they were working on the section of trail in Huron East near the intersection of County Road 25 and McNaught Line.

Lee says they expect to have the surfaces all done by the end of August and at that point they'll hand it over to the local groups to manage the trail and it will be up to them to make further improvements.

He adds, they'll be looking for trail wardens and stewardship groups, similar the Maitland Trail Association model.
